Move the site when the name changed as well

A migration is routine. A migration that also changes the company name, the product name or the address is a different piece of work.

Young companies rename things — the company, the product, or both — and the website move is usually scheduled for the same week, which is reasonable and makes it considerably harder.

The old name is embedded in more places than anybody expects, and a good number of them belong to other people.

Where the old name is living

Worth listing before a date is agreed.

  • Inside addresses, including any built from a product name.
  • In page titles and descriptions, which is what people still see in search results afterwards.
  • In links from other sites, which cannot be edited and have to be caught.
  • In coverage, directories and posts written about you, which will not be corrected.
  • In everything already sent — decks, emails, documentation and anything printed.

The decision for each group

Four outcomes, and the first is used far more than teams expect.

  • Redirect and keep it working indefinitely

The old addresses cost nothing to keep and are the only thing catching links nobody can update.

  • Hold the old domain

Not for sentiment. It is where a large share of the incoming traffic will arrive for years.

  • Publish one page that explains the change

Findable by searching the old name, which is what somebody who has lost you will actually do.

  • Let some of it go

Deliberately, with a decision recorded, rather than by not noticing it existed.

What has to happen on migration day

Both names have to resolve to something sensible from the first minute, and anything that sends email needs to be changed in step — a message arriving from a name nobody recognises does real damage in a week when recognition is exactly what is being rebuilt.

It is also worth doing the move and the rename as two changes if the schedule allows it. Doing them together halves the work and makes it impossible to tell which of them caused anything that goes wrong afterwards.
