Sanity website

Model your website content in Sanity and build the front end to fit

Content described as types and fields in Sanity, with the website built separately to display it — suited to sites where the same material has to appear in more than one place.

Sanity is one of the platforms that can hold a website's content. What distinguishes it in day-to-day use is that content is described as types and fields rather than as pages, and the editing screens follow the model defined for the project.

Where Sanity sits in the project

There are two halves. Sanity holds the content and provides the screens your team edits in. The website is a separate build that reads that content and decides how it is presented.

They meet through an API rather than through a shared template. That is why one entry can appear on a listing, on its own page, and inside a related block elsewhere without being written three times.

Content described as types, not as pages

The model is the part worth getting right, because nearly everything else follows from it.

  • A type for each kind of thing

    A service, a project, a team member, a location.

  • Named fields on each one

Title, summary, images, dates — whatever the site genuinely has to show.

  • References between them

A project points at the service it belongs to instead of repeating its name.

  • Rules about what is required

So an entry cannot be published half-filled and appear that way on the site.

What an editing session looks like

Short, which is the whole reason for doing the modelling first.

  1. Open the editing screens

The types and fields defined for your project, and nothing beyond them.
  2. Find the entry

By what it is — a project, a person — rather than by hunting for the page it sits on.
  3. Change what needs changing

    Text, images, references, dates.
  4. Publish it

That version becomes the one the site reads.
  5. The site picks it up

Whether that is immediate or happens on the next build depends on how the site is set up, and is decided with the architecture rather than assumed.

What to settle before anything is modelled

Cheap to answer now, expensive to change once content has been entered against them.

  • Which things are entries in their own right, and which are only fields on something else.
  • Which fields are genuinely required, and which are optional in practice.
  • What editors should not be able to change: page structure, URLs, navigation.
  • Who edits, who publishes, and whether those are the same person.
  • Where the content lives today, and how much of it is worth bringing across.
