An admin panel is worth building when someone in the business needs to change the website more often than it is reasonable to ask for it. The useful question is not whether editing is possible. It is which parts should be editable, and by whom.

Start from what actually changes

Before anything is built, it is worth listing what has been edited on your current site in the past year.

  • Prices, packages or opening hours.
  • Team members joining and leaving.
  • New projects, listings, properties, dishes or case studies.
  • Announcements and notices that carry a date.
  • Photographs that are replaced as the work moves on.
  • And what has not changed at all — usually most of the site.

Editable fields, not an editable page

The difference between these two decides whether the site still looks right in a year.

A field-based panel gives an editor a named box for each thing: a project has a title, a description, a set of photographs and a date. The design decides how those are arranged, so filling them in cannot leave a page half-built. A free-form page builder allows anything instead, including arrangements the design was never drawn for.

  • Fields are safe to fill in

There is no way to leave a page in a state it was not designed for.

  • The tenth entry looks like the first

Because both are the same shape.

  • Images belong to the entry

Uploading, replacing and describing a photograph happens where that photograph is used.

  • Layout stays a design decision

Rather than something rebuilt inside a text box each time.

Who edits, and what they should reach

Worth settling before the panel is built rather than after, because it shapes what gets built.

One person maintaining everything

The simplest case, and a common one: a single login, and everything editable that should be.

Several people with different jobs

Whoever adds projects does not necessarily need to reach prices.

Occasional editors

Someone who uses it twice a year needs it obvious rather than capable.

Content somebody else signs off

Where that applies, publishing has to be a separate step from editing.

When you do not need one

Where a handful of pages change once or twice a year, a panel is a system to build, learn and keep running for a job that takes a short message. The site is simpler without it, and simpler is worth something.

In the other direction, once the same information belongs on several pages at once, or the number of similar items keeps growing, the thing to look at is a content platform rather than a panel attached to one site.
