Static website

Build a website that is finished before anyone visits it

Every page built once, ahead of time, and delivered as a finished file — a sensible shape when your content is settled and you want less to keep running.

A static website is one where the pages already exist before anyone asks for them. There is no database and no application putting a page together per request; the host returns a file that was written when the site was built.

That is an architecture decision rather than a style of website. What it changes is how updates happen, and how much there is to look after afterwards.

What “static” means in practice

When the site is built, every page is written out in full. Publishing means placing those files on a host; visiting means receiving one of them. Nothing is assembled while the visitor waits.

Because nothing runs in the request path, there is no database to keep available and no server application to keep patched. That is the part of the maintenance load a static site removes. It does not remove design work, content work or hosting.

How quickly a page arrives still depends on the size of what is sent and where it is served from, rather than on the architecture on its own.

When this suits a site

Static earns its place when the content is settled and the site's job is to explain, show and be contacted.

  • Pages change occasionally

A few times a year rather than a few times a week.

  • Updates go through one route

There is no queue of people waiting to publish something.

  • Nobody logs in

No customer accounts, baskets, bookings or content that differs per visitor.

  • The set of pages is known

Services, about, work, contact — not a catalogue that grows every week.

What a static site can still include

Static describes how pages are delivered, not how much they are allowed to do.

A full multi-page structure

Separate pages for each service, for your work, and for anything else that deserves one.

Images, galleries and video

Presented exactly as they would be on any other site.

Interaction in the browser

Menus, sliders, tabs, filtering and animation all run on the visitor's own device.

Direct contact routes

Call and message links that open the channels you already answer.

How an update actually happens

There is no login. A change is made in the site's content, and the site is rebuilt and republished.

  1. You send the change

New wording, a replacement photograph, another project.
  2. It is applied to the content

Where the page copy lives, kept separate from the layout.
  3. The site is rebuilt

Every page affected by the change is written out again.
  4. The new files go live

They replace the previous ones on the host.

When a static site is the wrong shape

If you need to publish something yourself at short notice, this is the wrong trade. Every change goes through a rebuild, which puts a developer between you and your own website.

The same applies once several people need to edit, once the number of similar items keeps growing, or once anything on the site has to respond to who is looking at it. At that point an editable admin area or a content platform is the sensible answer, and static stops being a saving.
