Jamstack / DatoCMS website

Pre-render your site and keep the content editable in DatoCMS

Pages generated ahead of time from content your team edits in DatoCMS — an arrangement worth considering when content changes on a schedule rather than by the second.

Jamstack describes a shape rather than a product: the front end is built in advance, the content comes from a service such as DatoCMS through an API, and what gets deployed is the finished result.

It suits some projects well and others badly, and which is which comes down to how the content behaves rather than to the technology.

The two halves, and the seam between them

Understanding the seam is most of what matters here; the rest follows from it.

  • Content lives in DatoCMS

Entries, fields and media, edited by your team.

  • The front end is built separately

Templates and design, with no content written into them.

  • The two meet at build time

The build reads the entries and writes out the pages.

  • What is deployed is the result

    Finished pages, served as files.

What happens when someone publishes

Four steps, with a short gap between the first and the last that has to be acceptable for the content in question.

  1. An editor changes an entry in DatoCMS and publishes it.

  2. That publish signals the site to rebuild.

  3. The build runs and regenerates the pages the entry appears on.

  4. The new files are deployed, and the change is public.

Where this arrangement fits

Content that changes on a schedule

Weekly listings, a monthly menu, a steady stream of articles.

Sets of similar items

Where one template serves fifty entries, generating all of them costs little more than generating one.

A design worth building once, properly

Kept apart from the content, so neither ends up trapped inside the other.

Ordinary hosting at the end of it

What is deployed is files, which keeps the production side of the project simple.

Questions to answer before choosing this shape

  • How often the content changes, and at what times of day.
  • How quickly a change has to be visible after somebody publishes it.
  • How many entries there are, and how fast that number grows.
  • Whether anything on the site has to differ from one visitor to the next.
  • Who publishes, and whether a change appearing a short while later is acceptable to them.

Where it is the wrong choice

Anything that has to reflect a change the instant it is made does not belong behind a build step. Live stock figures, availability that is being booked against, prices that move during the day and anything shaped to the individual visitor are all reasons to keep that part of the site dynamic instead.

The shape is also not a property of the finished site on its own. How quickly pages arrive, and how much of the system is exposed, still depend on what the site does, what it loads and how it is hosted. The architecture decides where the work happens, not how well it is done.
