WordPress → Sanity migration

Move a WordPress site into a structured Sanity content model

Taking the content out of a WordPress installation, giving it a defined shape in Sanity, and rebuilding the front end against it.

The hard part of this move is not exporting the database. It is that a WordPress site keeps its content in several different places, and only some of them look like content from the outside.

So the work starts by finding out what the installation is actually holding, before anything is designed to hold it.

Where a WordPress site keeps things

Five places, and a typical site uses all of them without anyone having chosen to.

  • Posts and pages

The obvious part, and usually the easiest to move.

  • Custom fields

Added over the years by whoever needed one. Often the most valuable content on the site.

  • Plugin tables

Sliders, testimonials, team members and portfolios that a plugin stores in its own way.

  • Page-builder blocks

Layout and text saved together in one field, so neither can be read without the other.

  • The theme itself

Headings, contact details and whole sections written directly into template files.

How the content is audited before anything is modelled

The model is designed from what is really there, not from what the site looks like.

  1. List every post type and every field in use

Including the ones a former plugin left behind and nothing reads any more.
  2. Open real entries, not just the schema

Fields are frequently used for something other than their name suggests.
  3. Separate content from layout

In builder blocks especially, deciding which part is the text and which part is the arrangement.
  4. Mark what nothing links to

Drafts, duplicates and abandoned pages are decided on now rather than carried across by default.

What the Sanity model does differently

The move is worth doing because the destination is shaped, not because it is newer.

Defined types instead of a general page

A service, a case study and an article each have their own fields and their own required parts.

Content referenced rather than repeated

A person or an office is written once and pointed at from everywhere it appears.

Text stored as text

Kept apart from the markup that displays it, so a redesign does not mean re-entering it.

Editing screens built for the job

Editors see the fields their content actually has, not a general-purpose canvas.

What has no direct equivalent

Each of these is a decision to take during the audit, and each one is cheaper to take then.

  • Shortcodes, which are instructions rather than content.
  • Builder layouts, which are rebuilt as real page structure.
  • Plugin behaviour — forms, memberships, shops — which is a separate decision, not part of the content move.
  • Comments, if the new site is to have them at all.
  • The media library, which is usually worth reviewing rather than transferring whole.

What is preserved through the move

The public side should notice the improvement and nothing else.

  • Addresses

Kept where they can be, redirected where they cannot, mapped one line at a time.

  • Titles and descriptions

Carried across with the pages they belong to, including anything an SEO plugin was holding.

  • Images at full size

Taken from the originals in the library rather than from the resized copies on the pages.

  • Publication dates and authorship

Where an archive's order and history are part of what makes it useful.

When staying on WordPress is the better answer

Not every WordPress site should move, and this one is worth saying plainly. A small site whose editors are comfortable, whose plugins are maintained and whose content rarely changes is working. Replacing it buys a subscription, a new system to learn and a rebuilt front end in exchange for very little.

The move earns its cost when the content has outgrown the way it is stored — the same information re-typed on several pages, fields used for things they were never meant for, or a front end that cannot be changed without touching the content inside it. Where that is not what is happening, the honest recommendation is to leave it alone.
