Work out when one page has stopped being enough

A single page is the right answer for longer than most young companies believe, and there are four clear signs when it is not.

A young company's first site should be one page, and the argument for adding to it is usually made too early, in a meeting, on the grounds that a real company has a menu.

The useful version of the question is narrower: which specific thing can the site not currently do, and which single page would let it?

The signs one page has stopped working

Any two of these and it is time. One on its own usually is not.

  • You need to send somebody to part of it

And cannot, because it is a section halfway down something written for a different reader.

  • Two audiences are fighting for the same screen

Typically a customer and a candidate, both of whom now want a page of their own.

  • The same questions arrive before every call

Which means a page could answer them and the conversation could start further along.

  • The explanation no longer fits

There is something genuinely worth reading at length, and it is crushing the top of the page.

The order the pages should arrive in

One at a time, each because something was missing.

  1. A proper product or service page, so the front page can stop trying to explain everything.

  2. Whatever you are willing to say about what it costs, even if that is how it is decided rather than a figure.

  3. A short page about who is behind it, which does more work at this stage than at any later one.

  4. A careers page, once you are actually hiring and can describe the work honestly.

  5. Somewhere to publish, only when there is a second thing to publish and somebody to write it.

What still does not need a page

A page per feature, a page per customer type before you know which ones there are, a partners page with nobody on it, and a press page with nothing in it. Every one of them is an empty room a visitor can walk into.

The test is whether a page would exist to answer somebody, or to make the menu look longer. The second reason is common, understandable and always a mistake.
