Let a visitor try a small piece of the product

Explaining something nobody has a word for is hard. Letting them do one thing with it takes moments.

When a product is genuinely new, the gap between reading about it and understanding it is wide, and no amount of rewriting the headline closes it.

A small piece of the thing, running on the page, closes it immediately — and it can be a great deal smaller than the product itself.

What is worth building

In rough order of cost, and the least expensive is often the most convincing.

  • A short recorded run

Not a marketing video. The actual interface doing one useful thing, with nothing edited out.

  • One real output

A report, a result, an answer produced from example input, which shows what the product is for far better than a screenshot.

  • One step the visitor performs

They type or choose something and see what happens. The narrowest genuinely interactive option.

  • A restricted version of the product

The most persuasive and by far the most expensive, and rarely the right first move.

What to settle before building it

These decide whether it is a week or a quarter.

  1. Which single thing it demonstrates, stated in one sentence somebody outside the team agrees with.

  2. What data it runs on, and that none of it can be a real customer's.

  3. What it must not imply about speed, scale or anything the product cannot do yet.

  4. Who updates it when the product changes, since a stale demonstration is worse than none.

  5. What happens at the end of it, which should be a conversation rather than a signup wall.

Start smaller than the idea

Almost every version of this is scoped as a sandbox and would have worked as a recording. The recording can be made this week, tells you whether anybody watches it, and costs nothing to replace.

If it is watched to the end and produces conversations, the case for building the interactive version writes itself. If it is not, that is a finding worth having before a quarter has gone into it.
