Build a page to find out whether anybody wants it

One page, one idea, and a genuine attempt to learn something before the thing is built.

Before a product exists there is a cheaper question than how to build it: whether anybody, described specifically, would choose it over what they do now.

A page can help answer that, and it can also produce a very confident wrong answer. Which of the two you get depends almost entirely on how it is set up.

What such a page has to do

Four things, and the last is the one usually skipped.

  • Describe one idea, narrowly

A page hedging across three possible products tells you nothing about any of them.

  • Describe it as though it exists

Concretely, in the present tense, while being unambiguous that it is not available yet.

  • Say something about what it would cost

Interest that has never met a figure is the least informative kind there is.

  • Ask for something that costs the visitor a little

A considered answer, a specific question, a willingness to talk. A single click is almost free and worth about as much.

What it can and cannot tell you

Worth agreeing before the page is written, not after the numbers arrive.

  • Whether the description is understood, which is testable and is where most of these fail.
  • Which of two ways of explaining it produces more response.
  • Not whether anybody will pay. Nobody has been asked to.
  • Not the size of the market, which a page cannot observe and a spreadsheet should not pretend to.
  • Where the visitors came from, without which the entire result is uninterpretable.

Where these pages mislead

Traffic sent from somewhere friendly responds to almost anything, and a page shown to the wrong audience produces a discouraging result about the audience rather than about the idea. Both are misread as verdicts on the product.

The page also must not describe capabilities that do not exist as though they are running today. Being clear that something is not yet available costs a fraction of the responses and makes every one of them worth having.
