Redesign so each photograph says what it is proving

A picture of a finished bathroom is decoration. The same picture with one line beside it is evidence.

Most tiling sites have enough photographs. What they lack is any indication of what a visitor is meant to notice in them, so the whole set reads as pleasant and interchangeable.

This kind of redesign is mostly typographic: the layout that lets an image be large, and the text that gives it a job.

The layout decisions

Four, and they are all about giving an image room and a voice.

  • How large an image is allowed to be

Most templates cap it well below the size at which this work can be assessed.

  • Where the words sit

Beside or beneath the image, always attached to it, never in a separate paragraph further down the page.

  • Whether there is a detail view

A second, closer photograph of one part, which is often more persuasive than the wide shot.

  • How many images before the page tires

Six considered ones with captions outperform thirty in a grid, on every measure that matters.

What a caption should do

Direct the eye

Name the thing worth noticing, because a visitor outside the trade will not find it unaided.

State the difficulty

An uneven floor, an awkward junction, a material that is unforgiving. The difficulty is the argument.

Place it

Room, property type and anything constraining the job, so it reads as a real situation.

Stop

One or two sentences. A caption that becomes a paragraph is a page in the wrong place.

The limit of a redesign here

If the photographs do not show the work at close range, layout cannot fix that. That is a rebuild, or more often a morning with a camera on the next job.

And captions have to be written by somebody who did the work. We can set the pattern and the length; what was difficult about a particular job is not ours to invent.
