Legacy migration · Tiling

Work out how little of an old site is worth moving at all

A six-page site from 2014 is not really a migration project. It is a rewrite with two things carried across.

Migration is the right word for a large site with content worth preserving. For a small trade site it can be a misleading one, because most of what is there should not be reproduced.

The useful question is not how to move it. It is which two or three things must survive, and what the rest should be replaced by.

What genuinely has to survive

Usually a short list, and it is worth writing it down before anything else.

  • The domain, and who controls it

The one thing that is genuinely difficult to recover, and frequently registered by somebody no longer involved.

  • The photographs

At the largest size that still exists anywhere, because they are the only irreplaceable content on the site.

  • The few addresses that bring people

Usually two or three pages. Everything else can be retired without anyone noticing.

  • Email on the same domain

Which is not part of the website and will stop working if the order of the move is wrong.

What is better rewritten than moved

Carrying these across preserves a problem.

  • Text written a decade ago about a business that has changed since.
  • Pages listing every surface the business can tile, which attract the wrong enquiries.
  • Pages of two sentences created to have something under a menu item.
  • Any set of near-identical pages naming different places, which should not be recreated.
  • A news section with three posts, the newest from several years ago.

What that leaves

A smaller site than the one being replaced, written now, on a stack that will still be maintained in five years, with the photographs and the working addresses carried across.

It is not a change in how the business is found. Rebuilding changes what the site is made of and what it costs to keep; the honest description stops there.
