Organise a group site around the problem, not the depot

A driver with a noise does not know whether that is servicing, diagnostics or the body shop — and should not have to.

Once a business runs several workshops, its site tends to describe the company the way the company is arranged: sites, then divisions, then services.

Customers arrive the other way round. They have a symptom, a vehicle and a distance they are willing to drive, and what they want is somewhere to take it.

Three ways a group site can be arranged

Each is defensible. The wrong one for your customers is expensive.

  • By what the customer has

Symptoms and jobs first, with the site directing the enquiry to whichever workshop handles that work.

  • By location

Sensible when the workshops are far enough apart that distance settles the question on its own.

  • By division

Works when the divisions sell to genuinely different buyers — a body shop working for insurers and a workshop working for drivers.

  • A main route with a second one behind it

One structure carries the navigation, the other exists as index pages. Most groups end up here.

Decisions to take before anything is built

All of them commercial, none of them ours to take.

  • Which workshop owns an enquiry that two of them could handle.
  • Whether a vehicle may be moved between sites, and whether the customer is told.
  • Whether each workshop keeps its own name, and how prominently.
  • Who is allowed to change opening hours, and how quickly it takes effect.
  • Whether there is one number or several, which shapes every page on the site.

The part that has to stay obvious

Whatever structure wins, two things must never take more than one screen to find: where to take the vehicle, and who to speak to. Group sites lose these first, usually to a locations page three levels down.

It is also worth settling early what the site says when one workshop is full. Having somewhere else to send the work is the main practical advantage of being a group, and a site that never mentions it wastes the whole thing.
