Decide what a page does when it needs two sources

One page, content from the editing system and figures from somewhere else, and two ways for it to fail.

It is a common shape: the words come from wherever content is managed, and something else supplies stock, availability, prices or a list from another system.

The interesting question is not how to fetch both. It is what the page should be when one of them is unavailable, slow, or disagrees with the other.

Decisions to take per page

Four, and they usually have different answers.

  • Which source the page cannot exist without

Usually the content. If the other fails, the page should still be a page.

  • Whether old figures are better than none

For a price, often yes with a date attached. For availability, often no.

  • Whether the second source is read at build or in the browser

This is the decision that determines everything else about the page's behaviour.

  • Which one wins when they disagree

Two systems will eventually describe the same product differently, and something has to decide.

Building it so failures are visible

Three practical rules.

  • Reserve the space the second source will fill, so the page does not jump when it arrives.
  • Show plainly when a figure is unavailable rather than showing nothing at all.
  • Record the failure somewhere a person will see, because visitors will not report it.
