Legacy migration · Landscape practice

Turn ten years of posts back into a portfolio

The projects are all there. They are just spread across two hundred dated entries in reverse order.

A great many practice websites recorded their work as a blog, because that was what the site made easy. One garden appears as six posts written months apart, and the portfolio page shows four projects.

The migration is the moment that can be undone, and it is largely a sorting exercise rather than a technical one.

The sorting exercise before the migration

Do this before deciding anything about the new site's design.

  1. List every post, which is nearly always more than anybody expects.

  2. Group them by the project they belong to, accepting that some belong to none.

  3. For each project, decide what the entry should be: the strongest photographs and one account rather than six part-accounts.

  4. Decide what the leftovers are — genuine writing worth keeping, or notices that have served their purpose.

  5. Map every old address to its new destination, because a post can have been linked to for years.

What the practice gets back

A portfolio the size it always was

Frequently three or four times the number of projects the old portfolio page admitted to.

Material that can be used again

A project entry can appear in several places; a dated post effectively cannot.

The chronology, kept deliberately

Photographs of one garden over several years, which is the thing the blog format was accidentally good at.

The writing worth keeping

Genuine notes on plants, constraints or method, separated from announcements and given a home.

What it does not do

Reorganising a decade of posts does not change how the practice is found. Some old addresses will lose whatever standing they had, which is why the redirects matter and why nothing should be deleted without one.

What it changes is that the practice's own work stops being invisible inside its own website, which is usually the reason the conversation started.
