Plan how pages disappear before you generate hundreds of them

A page for every system, brand and model is easy to produce and remarkably hard to withdraw.

The obvious use of a data-driven build in this trade is a page for each type of equipment the company works with. Producing them is the simple half.

The half that decides whether it was a good idea is what happens when the business stops fitting a brand, a model is discontinued, or a range is replaced.

What retiring a generated page involves

Four questions, all of which should be answered before the first page exists.

  • What a visitor sees afterwards

A redirect to the range that replaced it, or to the category. Never an error, and never a page that silently stays.

  • What happens to links from elsewhere

Old pages are linked from directories, forums and manufacturers, and those links outlive the page by years.

  • Whether it should go at all

Equipment you no longer fit is still in people's houses, and a page about servicing it may be the most useful one on the site.

  • Who decides

Because otherwise nobody does, and the catalogue grows until it describes a business that no longer exists.

What that means for the data

Every entry has a state

Fitted, serviced only, withdrawn. One field, and it drives what appears and what redirects.

A withdrawn entry names its successor

Which is what makes an automatic redirect possible instead of a manual list somebody maintains.

A date it is looked at again

So the catalogue is pruned deliberately rather than when somebody notices.

A sense of how many is too many

Agreed early. A hundred thin equipment pages is a maintenance liability, not an asset.

The honest scope of this

Generating pages does not make a business easier to find, and a page that exists only because it could be generated is worth less than nothing once it is out of date.

The architecture is worth it when the catalogue is genuinely useful to a customer and genuinely maintained by the business. Where either is missing, a handful of written pages is the better answer.
