Legacy migration · Home remodeling

Get your content out of the page builder it was typed into

Ten years of project write-ups, each one locked inside a layout somebody assembled by dragging boxes around.

The commonest older remodelling site is built with a visual page builder. Every page is a nest of layout blocks, and the text and photographs live inside them rather than anywhere they can be read out.

That makes the content the difficult part of the migration, in a way an ordinary site is not.

Why this is harder than it looks

Content and layout are the same thing

There is no clean text to take; it is spread across columns, tabs and accordions that meant something visually.

Images sit at display size

Frequently resized on upload, so the originals of ten years of project photography may no longer exist.

Fragments that stop working

Galleries, sliders and forms that are references to a plugin rather than content, and become text when it is gone.

Pages nobody remembers

Drafts, duplicates and old versions kept as a copy, several of which are still publicly reachable.

How to approach the migration

Read the published site, not the builder's database.

  1. Take the content from the pages as they are published, which is the only place layout has already been resolved.

  2. Decide the shape a project entry should have, then fit the recovered text to it rather than reproducing the old layout.

  3. Recover images at the largest size available and note where only a small one survives.

  4. Decide what is not worth carrying — old drafts, duplicated pages, write-ups too thin to be evidence.

  5. Map and redirect every published address, including the duplicates you are retiring.

What the business gets

Content that exists as content: a project entry that can be edited, reused and moved without touching a layout, which is the thing the old site made impossible.

The move does not change how the site ranks, and we would not present it that way. It changes what it costs to keep the site accurate for the next ten years.
