Present a new part of the business before it has a portfolio

The company has moved into something new, and the website has one paragraph and no completed jobs to show for it.

Contracting companies expand into adjacent work steadily, and every time the website faces the same problem: a new capability with no evidence behind it yet.

Overstating it is the usual response and the wrong one. There are honest ways to give a new division real presence on a site while it is still new.

What can be said before there is a portfolio

Four kinds of material, all of them true on the first day.

  • Who is running it

A named person with their own background is the strongest thing a new division has, and it is available immediately.

  • Why the company went into it

The commercial reasoning, which reads as considered rather than opportunistic when it is actually stated.

  • What has been put behind it

Whatever investment, training or equipment the business has genuinely made, described as fact rather than as ambition.

  • The work it grew out of

The existing capability it sits next to, which is real evidence even though it is not evidence of the new thing.

Where it goes in the site

The structural decision matters more than the wording.

  • Whether it sits alongside the established divisions or one level below them.
  • Whether it appears in the main navigation before it can carry the traffic that brings.
  • Whether existing customers are told about it on pages they already visit.
  • What happens to the page once there are three completed jobs, which is a different page.

What not to do while it is new

Do not borrow. Stock photographs of somebody else's installation, and case studies belonging to a supplier, are recognised for what they are and cost more than the empty space would.

And do not imply depth that is not there. A page that says this is new, here is who runs it and here is what stands behind it, is more persuasive than one written as though the division has existed for a decade.
