Website rebuild · Driving school

Rebuild a site that hides the person doing the teaching

The product is one named individual in one vehicle, and the site says 'our team of professionals'.

A great many instructor websites are written in the plural, illustrated with photographs of strangers, and signed by nobody at all.

It is an odd choice for a business whose entire proposition is spending two hours a week alone in a car with one particular person.

How the mismatch shows

Four signs, all of which a learner registers without naming.

  • The plural voice

'We pride ourselves' from a business of one reads as a template, because it almost always is one.

  • Photographs of nobody in particular

Instantly recognisable as bought imagery, and they undo whatever the words were doing.

  • No name anywhere on the site

A page that never says who you are is asking for a decision it has not earned.

  • Language belonging to a larger firm

Coverage and capacity described as though arranging them were somebody else's job.

What the rebuild replaces it with

In order of how much difference each one makes.

  1. Your name, once, high up, beside a photograph of you and the actual vehicle.

  2. The first person throughout, which is simply how you talk to a learner anyway.

  3. How long you have taught and what you enjoy teaching, in two or three sentences.

  4. Whatever former learners wrote, in their words and with their permission.

  5. What you do not do, which persuades more than any list of what you do.

What this does not mean

It does not mean writing at length about yourself. Two short paragraphs and one good photograph do the whole job, and a longer version starts to work against you.

It also does not mean removing structure. The practical pages — areas, hours, how lessons are arranged — still carry most of the traffic. What changes is who appears to be behind them.
