Legacy migration · Decking and carpentry

Decide which of your five addresses is actually the website

An old site, a trade-directory profile, two social pages and a listing somebody set up in 2016.

Small businesses in this trade rarely have one presence. They have several, built at different times, and customers arrive at whichever one a search turned up.

A migration is the point at which somebody has to decide which of them is the actual website, because only one of them can be, and the others need pointing at it.

Finding out what exists

This takes an afternoon and is almost never done.

  1. Search for the business by name and by trade, and list everything that comes back.

  2. Establish which of them the business can actually log into, which is usually fewer than expected.

  3. Work out which ones enquiries actually come through, by asking rather than by guessing.

  4. Note which carry out-of-date details — an old number, a former address, work no longer offered.

What a migration can and cannot redirect

Your own domains

Redirect properly and permanently. This is the only part of the picture fully under your control.

Directory and social profiles

Cannot be redirected. They can be updated to point at the new site, which requires access to each one.

Profiles you cannot reach

The awkward case. Sometimes recoverable through the platform, sometimes only supplanted over time.

An old site you no longer want

Keep the domain and redirect it. Letting it lapse is the one step nobody can undo.

What the business ends up with

One address that is the website, with everything the business controls pointing at it, and a list of the profiles it does not control with whatever was corrected on each.

It does not change how the business is found; several of those profiles will keep appearing regardless. What changes is that all of them now lead to the same current information.
