Get your own project record out of the website before you move it

For a lot of contractors the website is the only place the firm's completed work is written down at all.

Ask where the photographs and descriptions of a firm's last fifty jobs live, and the answer is often the website, with the originals on a phone belonging to somebody who has left.

That makes a migration something more than a technical exercise. It is the moment the record either gets recovered into the business or quietly disappears.

Recovering the record

Before a single page is designed.

  1. Extract every project photograph at the largest size the old site holds.

  2. Extract the written descriptions, which are frequently the only account of what the job involved.

  3. Put both somewhere the business controls, rather than only inside the new site.

  4. Note what is missing, so it can be asked for while the people who ran the jobs are still there.

What the move itself then involves

Addresses

Every published address mapped to a destination or retired deliberately, with redirects written for both.

A shape for the material

The recovered projects re-entered as consistent records rather than as pages of varying length.

Documents

Policies, capability statements and certificates the business supplies, several of which are linked from elsewhere.

The enquiry route

Where it currently sends and who reads it, confirmed before the old site is switched off.

What is worth carrying, and what is not

Not all of it should move. A decade of short news items announcing that somebody joined the firm is not a portfolio, and a migration is a reasonable point at which to stop maintaining it.

The projects are different. Even a badly written entry about a real job is worth recovering, because the job happened and the account of it cannot be recreated later.
