Build a convincing site when most of your work cannot be shown

Restricted sites, confidential clients and agreements that rule out photographs leave a lot of contractors with nothing obvious to publish.

A great deal of commercial work cannot be shown. The client will not be named, the site cannot be photographed, or the agreement simply forbids it.

The usual response is a website full of stock imagery and general assurance, which persuades nobody. There is more publishable material than it first appears — it is just not photographs.

What can be published instead

Four kinds of material, all of them yours and none of them naming anybody.

  • The shape of the work

Sector, building type, the scope you delivered and the constraints you worked under, without the address or the client.

  • How you approach a particular kind of job

Written specifically enough that a reader recognises somebody who has done it before.

  • The people who run the work

Frequently the strongest publishable asset, and the one most commercial sites reduce to four job titles.

  • What your business already writes down

Policies, method statements, capability statements and whatever accreditation your organisation actually holds.

Sorting out what you may publish

Worth doing once, properly, rather than page by page under pressure.

  • Who inside the business decides whether a project may be described at all.
  • What the contract for that job actually permits, which varies far more than people assume.
  • Whether the client has ever been asked, since a surprising number will agree to something limited.
  • The level of detail you will use by default when the answer is no.
  • Where that decision is recorded, so the next person does not have to ask again.

What not to reach for

Stock photography of somebody else's building is the standard substitute and it actively costs credibility, because a professional reader recognises it immediately.

The other temptation is to imply a relationship the contract does not allow you to state. An anonymous description of real work is stronger than a hint about a name, and it does not create a problem later.
