Send people where your product is actually bought

A producer's website rarely takes the order. Its real job is getting somebody to the merchant, the shop, the market or the phone.

Many producers reach their customers through somebody else — a merchant, a wholesaler, a retailer, a market stall or a standing arrangement made by telephone years ago.

A website built as a shop serves none of that. A website built to direct people to the right route serves all of it, and it is a much shorter site.

The routes a producer may have

Most businesses have three of these at once and name none of them on the site.

  • Through a merchant or wholesaler

Where the visitor needs to know who stocks it and what to ask for, in the terms that buyer will recognise.

  • Direct, by arrangement

Usually by telephone or standing order rather than a form, and worth saying so rather than implying a checkout.

  • Through shops or a stall

Where the visitor needs a place and an opening time, which is a fact that changes and must be easy to edit.

  • At the gate

If you sell from the farm at all, this is the page people arrive looking for, and it is usually the one that does not exist.

What each route needs on the site

A name and a way to reach a person

Trade buying still happens between people, and a general address is where an enquiry goes to be forgotten.

The names a buyer would use

Varieties, grades and pack formats stated as they appear on an order rather than as they are said on the farm.

Where and when

Places and times, kept in one editable block, because these are the facts that go stale first.

What you do not do

Minimums, what you will not split, and who you cannot supply. It saves more time than anything else on the site.

Why this makes a shorter site

A producer's site does not need a page for every product to do its job. It needs the range stated accurately once, the routes to it made obvious, and a person named at the end of each.

The temptation is to build the shop first and the directing afterwards. Doing it the other way round is cheaper, useful immediately, and it shows within a season whether anybody would have used a shop at all.
