Build a stock list that keeps up when a machine sells

Somebody drives two hours for a machine that went last Thursday. That is a website problem, not a sales one.

Used machinery is the part of an equipment site where being wrong has an immediate cost, and it is the part most likely to be edited by hand between other jobs.

A pre-built site handles this well, but only if the question of where the truth lives is answered before anything is built.

What the architecture does about it

Three mechanisms, and none of them is magic.

  • The site is rebuilt when the list changes

Rather than on a schedule, so a machine marked sold disappears within minutes instead of overnight.

  • Sold is a state, not a deletion

The page stays, says plainly that it has gone, and offers what is similar — which is worth more than a missing page.

  • One source, several views

The listing, the machine page, any search and any feed all read the same record, so they cannot disagree.

What has to be agreed

All of it commercial rather than technical.

  • Which system is the truth — a stock package, a spreadsheet, or the website itself.
  • Who marks a machine sold, and how soon after the handshake.
  • Whether there is a state between available and sold, and what a visitor is told during it.
  • Whether a figure appears at all, which is a commercial decision the architecture does not make.
  • What the site shows if the connection to that system stops working.

What this does not solve

It cannot make information true that nobody has entered. If a machine is sold on a Friday and recorded on a Monday, the site is wrong all weekend regardless of how it is built.

That is worth saying plainly, because the architecture is often bought as a fix for a habit. The build removes the delay between the record changing and the page changing; the record still has to change.
